If the idea of pulling waste gasses from the air and turning them into a sustainable plastic sounds far-fetched to you, you wouldn’t be alone.  But Mark Herrema is challenging that thinking.  He’s the co-founder and CEO of Irvine-based Newlight Technologies, a developer of a green technology that can potentially reverse climate change.

Newlight has developed the means to pull carbon and oxygen molecules from the air containing greenhouse gasses and convert them into a sustainable plastic material that is biodegradable in a waste-disposal setting.  The technology can use gasses, including carbon dioxide and methane, from landfills, wastewater treatment plants and energy facilities. The process is “carbon negative,” meaning it captures more carbon than is consumed and released during production. And it’s oil-free.
